Refurbishment of Bridge over Buananyup Drain on Florence Road
Bridge 43 is a four span single lane timber bridge and is located on Florence Road in the Shire of Busselton crossing the Buayanyup Drain. Project Value $400,000 amd WML Fee $55,000
The bridge had a timber substructure and superstructure except for Abutment 1 which is stone masonry and Pier 2 which is reinforced concrete.
The elements of the bridge that required rectification work included:
- Piles and halfcaps on Pier 1
- Pile on Pier 3
- All of Abutment 2
- Replacement of Stringers in Span 1, 2, 3 and 4.
- Corbel at Pier 2
- Concrete overlay on deck
- Safety barriers
- Pile banding and stringer bolting
- Minor maintenance of timber elements such as end grain sealing and bolt tightening.
The bridge had deteriorated to a poor condition and the load capacity of the bridge had been reduced to a 4 tonne limit. A Preliminary design study was undertaken by WML and investigated a range of options including refurbishment, construction of a new single lane bridge and construction of a new two lane bridge. The lowest NPV option was to refurbish the existing bridge to its original load capacity and this recommendation was adopted by the client.
WML undertook the detailed design of the refurbishment and undertook construction inspections to ensure that compliance with the drawings and specifications was achieved.
